Berlin has long had a reputation as Europe’s greatest budget paradise for students and artists. But as the city goes through extensive development and an accompanying rise in accommodation costs, is this still true?
The short answer is YES! It’s still significantly cheaper to live in Berlin than any other large city in Western Europe. And given that living expenses are one of the largest parts of the total cost of studying it has to be at the top of every budding student’s list of cities to consider.
London vs. Berlin
Let’s look at the total annual costs of doing a degree in London compared with Berlin.
The UK Border Agency (UKBA) requires you to have a budget of at least £1265 per month living expenses to study in London. Tuition fees for a typical university course in the UK range are £9250 per year for EU students or around £15000 for international students.
So the total cost of a degree in London ranges from £24000 per year to an eye watering £30000 per year.
In contrast, the equivalent authority in Germany requires students to demonstrate that they have €720 per month to cover their living costs with tuition fees for a dBs Berlin degree costing as little as €7000 per year.
The total cost of doing a dBs Berlin degree is therefore a very reasonable €15,640 per year whereas in London it’s €28,550 for an EU student and significantly more for an international student. That’s nearly €13,000 less per year than the cheapest university degree in London. So €39,000 saved over the life of the course. That either makes good reading for your parents or money you could save towards your first studio!
Of course, the living costs are a minimum for students living life on a budget. For more information on cheap living in Berlin read this website http://berlincheap.com/
