A Q&A with Our Music, Film and Acting Summer School Course Leads

Summer is an open door, and all of Berlin is out to play. We’re drunk – not from the ubiquitous open airs, but the uplifting cocktail of long days and blue skies. Between green trees and graffiti is a sense of belonging; endless possibilities! There is no better time to become whoever you want to be. And for aspiring music producers, filmmakers and screen actors, there is no better place than the dBs Berlin Summer School.

With creativity at every corner, summer in Berlin is a powerful catalyst to your dream career. At our Summer School, you can go from zero experience to music producer, filmmaker or screen actor in just six weeks – all the while lapping up the city’s lively scene. Swap your beach bag for a camera; your deck chair for the stage; your swimming trunks for a synthesizer. Why kick back this summer when you can kick-start?!

In the intensive course, you’ll develop the practical tools, skills and essential techniques you need to start achieving your ambitions – whether you wish to go it alone or continue study in one of our higher level courses. That’s not to mention connecting and collaborating with like-minded creatives from all over the world.

The Summer School takes place from the 24th of June to the 3rd of August. With only the last spots available before the 17th of June final deadline, we caught up with the music, film and acting Summer School course leads to ask them three important questions. Scroll down to your desired course!

Music Production

Brian Ledwidge Flynn

“The strong, vibrant and dynamic energy of this marvellous city seems to magically legitimise and support the creative impulse.”

What will students learn at the Summer School that they can’t teach themselves?

By attending the Summer School, students will have an opportunity to experience music creation and production in the real world. This equates to guided hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology, such as modular synthesis, software and hardware-based production methods. Plus, established and timeless processes outside of the laptop. For example, our full multitrack studios, real instruments and a myriad of industry-standard outboard fx, microphones and monitors.

Another clear advantage is the real-life feedback and guidance on your work by music production professionals, all tailored to your vision. Last, but certainly not least, is the exciting potential of collaboration and network building between participants. Anyone who has worked in the music industry knows, you can’t do it alone!

Why is Berlin the ideal place to broaden your music production skills?

Berlin has long been held as a hub of cultural and creative diversity and innovation. The strong, vibrant and dynamic energy of this marvellous city seems to magically legitimise and support the creative impulse. Here, things are possible which would seem overambitious or naive elsewhere. That’s because here you are always surrounded by artists, dreamers and doers all bound in a community of proactive creative expression. In my experience, Berlin makes your wildest creative dreams seem within reach. It’s that belief which is central to any kind of success, whether it be personal or professional.

What’s your favourite thing about the course?

My favourite thing about the course is how it illustrates the power of a creative collective. Of course we provide all the facilities and cutting-edge resources a music professional might need. Ultimately, however, it’s the ‘vibe’ of the shared exploration and fresh perspectives, alongside the collaborative and creative environment, that energises me as a tutor and producer. After each day at dBs Berlin, I always find myself full of brand-new ideas to use in my own work!

Film Production

dBs Berlin Summer School: How to Grow Your Greatness in Just 6 Weeks

“One learns best with others; projects that you dream of can come true.”

What will students learn at the Summer School that they can’t teach themselves?

The main thing the participants will learn is how to work in a film team. Filmmaking is teamwork; it’s impossible to learn alone. The students will be divided into smaller groups for their projects. They will need to cooperate with each other, as well as participants from the acting and music Summer School courses.

Why is Berlin the ideal place to broaden your film production skills?

Berlin is a hub of creative people. If you go out in the evening, you will almost certainly meet filmmakers, actors, musicians and other artists. According to my experience, one learns best with others; projects that you dream of can come true. That’s not to mention non-stop parties.

What’s your favourite thing about the course?

My favourite thing about the course are the final projects the students will be doing in collaboration with the other two courses. I believe in this way they can achieve the maximum results in a short six weeks, all while having fun.

Screen Acting

Sarah Bleasdale

“The Summer School is a crash course in the foundations of each skill set required to birth outstanding screen actors.”

What will students learn at the Summer School that they can’t teach themselves?

We want people with a passion. We want to grow this passion from a beginner level in just six weeks. The Summer School is therefore a crash course in the foundations of each skill set required to birth outstanding screen actors. We do this with a great variety of Berlin-based professionals – each tutor an expert in their chosen field and working in the industry. Students will receive training in areas such as voice, acting skills/camera, movement, scene studies and audition and monologue techniques. The scene study will be filmed by the film students and the acting students will be starring in three films produced by the film students!

Why is Berlin the ideal place to broaden your acting skills?

dBs Berlin, and Berlin as a whole, is a melting pot! The school is a gateway into the English-speaking film network here. Students will gain exposure to a fantastic mix of perspectives via our tutors and the film and music students. In fact, this Screen Acting Summer School course offers a unique opportunity to directly collaborate with the film and music students, growing vital relationships that can be built on in the future.

What’s your favourite thing about the course?

The collaboration and crossover classes with the film students, the stellar tutor line up, the setting… and the fact that you get to be surrounded by Berlin’s vibrant summer community!
