In the beginning of January, dBs Film hosted two workshops organised by FEST Film Lab, with Paul Miller – producer – and Allan Starski – production designer.
This production workshop was entitled Film Financing in an Entrepeneurial Age and it looked at how to develop, finance and complete a film from the viewpoint of a creative producer. It was also about setting off on the right track and finishing ahead of the game.
The attendees completed different practical exercises, including pitching their own projects and pitching some based on news articles. This gave them a chance to develop their skills from the beginning of the process. It’s always good to practice this so that regardless of whether you are presenting to financiers, producers or the creative team, you are prepared.
Paul Miller is an independent producer working in the United States, Europe and the Middle East. He has produced, among many other titles, Prozac Nation and Snow Angels. Previously, he was also the Director of Funding at the Doha Film Institute.
Attendees were in constant discussion about the amazingly detailed and arduous job that Allan Starski has been doing for so many years. His production design workshop focused on a diversity of topics in the craft of filmmaking. As one of the top production designers today, he has collaborated with directors such as Roman Polanski, Steven Spielberg, Andrzej Wajda, and Peter Webber, in films such as The Pianist and Schindler’s List.
Participants were exposed to what variables make for strong visuals. They were also given an overview of what it’s like to be a production designer or work with one. Specifics on how the art department interacts with other department was also briefed and of course, a lot of tricks of the trade were exchanged.
According to the FEST Film Lab team, dBs Film was as a great location for these events and the facilities were so extraordinary that they made them all want to go back to school! As a partner school for FEST New Directors New Films Festival, it’s a pleasure for us to host the Film Lab team and we look forward to joining them in Espinho, Portugal in June.
If you’d like to come see what they were so excited about, why not visit us during one of our monthly Open Days?
